Homer Inc.: Edward Luttwak reviews a new translation of the Iliad

I guarantee there are about five other people who will be interested in this, but guys, this review had me enthralled. It talks about translations of Homer into other languages, and redaction Library of Alexandra-style, and why we can rely on the Iliad as a historical source, and why the text is so freaking revolutionary, and just. The Iliad isn’t even the text of my heart (that’d be the Odyssey), but this makes me want to run back home and crack it open.

I’m one of those five. And I think I’ve got about five more on my tumblrfeed, so this is for all of you: an article on translations of the Iliad!

It makes me want to a) go get this new Mitchell translation posthaste (trip to the Seminary Co-op? yeeeees… ; b) someday be good enough at Chinese to read the Chinese translation with the help only of the Greek facing-page. Which is the weirdest thing to want. But here we are.

So completely relevant to my interests and at least one other person who follows me.
